Trump Supporter: ‘Make America Great Again’ Means Taking U.S. Back to Time Before ‘The Homosexuals’
Post-Debate Focus Group Participant Thinks Her Values Are What Will Make America Great
A Donald Trump supporter who participated in a CBS News focus group after the final presidential debate seems to think Donald Trump’s values are aligned with her own, and so making America great again means taking the nation back to a time before “the homosexuals” and abortion.Â
One participant identified as “Barbara,” as Raw Story reports, was part of the small group mixed with Clinton and Trump supporters. She told CBS News’ political director and “Face the Nation” host John Dickerson that “morality and values, based on what the country was based on,” are her big issues.Â
“I think that the laws that Obama has passed, the way the country has — I call it down turning. Some of the other people are proud of it and happy for it. I personally am against it, the homosexuals, the abortions. All the stuff, I am against,” Barbara shared.
“When Donald Trump says, ‘Make America great again,’ is that what you hear?” Dickerson astutely asked. “That it’s going to go back to before the time that you’re now describing?”
Barbara agreed “that’s part of it.”
Nowhere in the Constitution or the Federalist Papers does it say women should be denied the right to choose and same-sex couples should be denied the right to marry. Nowhere in our founding documents does it say anything close to that, but the United States Declaration of Independence does say this: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
Later, Barbara told the group how she would feel if Hillary Clinton is elected.Â
“She needs prayer,” Barbara offered, conceding, “The country always needs prayer.”
Of course, what Barbara is apparently saying is that “Make America Great Again” means taking the nation back to a time when LGBT people were not only not equal, but to a time when being LGBT was illegal, and LGBT people were forced to live lives of shame and in constant terror, were unable to marry or form families, talk about their personal lives at work, teach in schools, serve their nation as lawmakers or in the military, and were subjected to hate, recrimination, physical and emotional violence and abuse.
“Make America Great Again” to Barbara also means forcing women, especially young women, to back-alley abortionists, risking their health and often their lives or, often, their ability to conceive and give birth in the future.Â
It’s unclear how that is “great.”
Today, under “the laws that Obama has passed” and under the ideals he helped usher in and/or secure, teenage pregnancy is the lowest it’s ever been and divorce rates have declined.Â
