Politifact Just Rated Pat McCrory’s Latest Comment ‘Mostly False’ – Guess How Many Are True?
Did the North Carolina Governor Lie During His ‘Meet the Press’ Interview?
Governor Pat McCrory wasn’t exactly honest during his “Meet the Press” interview this weekend. The folks at Politifact, the Pulitzer Prize winning non-partisan fact checkers at the Tampa Bay Times rated one of his comments “Mostly False,” but it’s the North Carolina Republican who really should be looking at his entire scorecard, because it’s not very good.Â
“The city of Charlotte passed a bathroom ordinance mandate on every private-sector employer in Charlotte,” Gov. McCrory told NBC News host Chuck Todd on Sunday.Â
“It’s not government’s business to tell the private sector what their bathroom, locker room, or shower practices should be. Not only the private business, but also the Y.M.C.A. and other non-profit organizations,” McCrory added, several times.

Politifact asked, “Is it true that the Charlotte ordinance would have dictated the bathroom practices of the entire private sector?”
Calling McCrory’s claim “an exaggeration,” Politfact says Charlotte’s ordinance “would have applied to place of public accommodation, like hotels and stores and other places selling goods and services to the public. While that is a big category, the ordinance would not have applied to private clubs, nonprofits or organizations with viewpoints that would have been at odds with the law, nor would have it really impacted business that don’t deal with customers.”
The talking point contains an element of truth but exaggerates the scope of the law. We rate his statement Mostly False.
Overall, Politifact has rated six of Governor McCrory’s statement, and his average isn’t good.
Three (50%) are rated “half true,” two (33%) are “Mostly False,” and one (17%) is downright “False.” Note the North Carolina governor has not a single statement rated “True” or “Mostly True.” Which is not to say he doesn’t make true statements, but the ones that catch the ear of Politifact have never been wholly true.
