  • Josh Duggar: If Christians Can't Discriminate Against Gays They're Victims Of Discrimination

Reality TV star and director of an anti-gay hate group, Josh Duggar shared his thoughts on the same-sex marriage case before the Supreme Court.

"19 Kids and Counting" reality TV star Josh Duggar has become something of a folk hero to the far Christian right, who see him as an anti-choice and anti-gay icon. Duggar is also the executive director of Tony Perkins' Family Research Council Action – the political action arm of the anti-gay hate group.

On Sunday, after speaking at the National Organization For Marriage's anti-gay marriage hate rally, CNS News interviewed Duggar about this week's Supreme Court marriage case.

"Natural marriage has been clearly defined over the years," Duggar, speaking in the vernacular of the religious right, said.

"Right now in America there is an agenda to silence people of faith, those who hold a dissenting opinion," Duggar told CNS. "That’s not what America was founded on. America was founded on respect, tolerance, and really not discriminating against people based on their religious convictions."

In other words, not allowing Christians to discriminate against gay people is "discriminating against people based on their religious convictions."

Duggar also made a false comparison between Roe v. Wade and same-sex marriage. In 1973 when the Supreme Court decided on Roe, there was far less support for the right of women to choose. Today, 61 percent of Americans support marriage equality.

"I think what we have to realize is this is only the beginning of a larger discussion, and what's really at stake here is the American family,' Duggar said, promising to continue to fight against the rights of same-sex couples regardless of how the Supreme Court rules.

“I believe strongly, being the oldest of 19 kids and counting that you know marriage is central to the family and every single child deserves a mother and father,” Duggar continued. “And I'm sure grateful for my parents and I'm grateful for my wife and we have our fourth child on the way due in July, and I think it's just such a blessing when you see family and you see that you can honor each other.”

Duggar also claimed that "only one other country in the entire world has ever redefined marriage and that was Brazil when they stepped in through the court system to do that."

Raw Story's Travis Gettys was quick to set the record straight this morning.

"In fact, 18 countries worldwide legally approved same-sex marriage through legislative action or court rulings, and two others – Mexico and the United States – recognize same-sex unions in at least some regions," Gettys notes.

Courts do have to step in, even if the will of the people go with an injustice at the time. Slave industry had to be written out, for the whole country, and still needing readdressing for the Jim Crow laws that blatantly carried forth discrimination at the state levels, even defining marriage between one ethnic group and not mixed. Marriage equality does nothing to stop Duggars faith or terms of marriage, the fight is just a rehash of not wanting to let go of a discrimination pillar. Mind your own house, not your neighbors.

This topic just makes me mad. Ok yes the lgbt community is not of the norm but we have been around forever shunned away like dogs in a corner . You dont need to support us or be our friend . But LET US LIVE EQUALLY AND JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE. We want kids let us have them. So many straight couples have babies and put them up for adoption, why be against a lesbian or gay couple adopting that child for example. IF they will love and cherish that child as it was there ownand give them everything they need to be healthy and happy. Let us get married just like everyone else. At the end of the day we are no different we all want the same things just in different people. Why must a goverment rule what goes on in our homes if its not hurting anyone . And why must people like Josh Duggar think that there lifestyle is superior to anyone else’s. Keep religion out of this or doesnt anyone remember all the religious wars from the past. Number one thing to remember is Freedom our ancestors all came here for it. Dont reverse go forward .

This country was founded on respect and equality? Seriously? Josh Duggar is an uneducated boy who has no idea what he is talking about. He was sheltered from the realities of this world, home schooled and grew up without tv and internet. He is talked out of both sides of his a**.

Your beliefs are yours. No one can take them from you. I would like to say, that by saying “every single child deserves a mother and a father” it does not seem right to have child after child after child. when there are so many children waiting to be adopted. Many same sex couples adopt those children. Those children really do not care if it’s mom and dad, dad “A” and dad “B” or mom “C” and mom “D”. They want people who love them. A family where no one is perfect but still love each other anyway.

Ms. Hinson – please explain to me how, if two men were to marry each other in a voluntary and loving manner, or two women were to marry each other in a voluntary and loving manner, how that would harm my marriage of over eleven years that is a heterosexual marriage? (My wife wonders what your answer would be, too.)

Oh, you may not use the Bible (first, which Bible – there are hundreds, which sort of makes me wonder how it could be written by god), since the United States is not officially a Christian nation.

And Ms. Hinson, I am prepared to suffer the same fate that Mary Dyer did, rather than submit to your rapine and homophobic attitudes.

But, rather than tell you to go to hell, I will share some of my lutefisk, sauerkraut, and generic SPAM hotdish with you instead.

Have a nice day, and may the good Flying Spaghetti Monster bless you, Ms. Hinson – ra-men!

If Christians can discriminate against gays, with your logic, then, as an Atheist, I can discriminate against Christians. If I can’t, you’re discriminating against me!

@zachary E: You are echoing Jesus’ questions to one of the self-righteous men standing near him: “How is it you see the speck in your brother’s eye and not the log in your very own?” The Duggars of this world are the ultimate among self-righteous hypocrites. They like to point out the wrongs they perceive in others, all the while holding themselves up as some moral role model. They aren’t! The Duggars have sullied Mother Earth by spawning 19 children. That is the real perversion; not the gays and lesbians.

@bhinson simplest statement, you are wrong. Yes, what this Dugger is saying is free speech, but it is also hate speech, meanwhile the statements by gay activists on the other side, are free speech as well, but it’s not hate speech.

Do you understand the difference? I am guessing you don’t because it’s obvious from your statement that you don’t understand how the two points are very different.

I could go on a long explanation, but how about I just pose a couple questions to you instead?

Can you explain to me how your religious right, your religious belief, or Josh Duggar’s religious beliefs or rights are infringed upon by allowing an equal legal right to 2 people of the same sex as we allow to 2 people of the opposite sex to engage in the legal contract of marriage in order to gain equal representation under the law? Please remember that there are two different types of marriages, one is a legal contract between two as designated by the government and law, the other is a spiritual contract between two as designated by a religion. This discussion is about a legal contract, not about a spiritual contract.

Is this guy serious?! Nice open ended answer with nothing specific to say. I can still see the hate through the cloaked approach. It’s all about families?! So the 50% divorce rate and multitudes of homeless children and adults are of no concern? How about you help people before you attack a group.

@barbie. Don’t delude yourself. Duggar spews. Hatred. I just don’t understand why someone’s life is anybusiness of mine. When someone is condemning people for who they are, that is hatred. None of us has the right to sit in judgment, period! And to use the Bible as your handbook to justifyyour hatred is as non- Christian as you can get.

@ronnie MC: You are correct in that this nation was NOT founded as a Christian nation. However, Washington and Jefferson were Deists, believing in God. Jefferson went a bit further claiming himself to be a Unitarian. Traditionally, Unitarians do not believe in the “Triune God” or the “Trinity”. Benjamin Franklin was an atheist. What too many today, especially the right wing Gestapo Christians, forget is how this country was created and settled on the grounds of freedom of religion. Our Founders were fed up with the tyranny of the Church of England and how the Church/religion encroached upon every aspect of English life. We are witnessing the reincarnation of that oppressive form of religion among the American Christian right wing as they work vigorously to turn this nation into a theocracy.

    • commented 2015-05-01 11:03:19 -0400
America was not founded on “Christian” anything and the Founding Fathers have voiced and wrote such as that would be a violation of the first 10 words of the first amendment. It is 100% illegal for the American government to force gay Americans to adhere to your "values’, your religion, your version of “God”, or your religious definitions of anything through American law. There are people of faith, religious leaders, and houses of worship who recognize marriage between 2men or 2women. You have NO right to decide how I form MY family or to stop me from doing it. Anti-gay “Christians” have no right to a say in MY life or MY rights. NONE. Get over it. We will NOT be forced.to bow down to your “Christian” version of Sharia Law. This is NOT negotiable. MY LIFE MY RULES!

The FRC is a hate group:

      - FRC speakers and members Steve Anderson, Donnie Romero, and David Berxins have called for the execution of LGBT people.

      - The FRC’s Peter Sprigg has said “I would much prefer to export homosexuals from the United States”, has denounced Lawrence v. Texas wishing that it were still illegal to be gay and punishable by prison time, and promotes “ex-gay” rape and torture just like Nazi general Heinrich Himmler did.

      - The FRC publicly supported the Uganda “Kill the Gays” bill which demands a mother turn her gay son or daughter over to the Gestapo ….. I mean police or face 5-7 years in prison for “harboring a homosexual”.

      - The FRC condemned the United Nations for passing a resolution denouncing human rights violations against LGBT people including murder.

      - The FRC supports the law in Gambia that makes being gay punishable by prison and or death signed by the Christian president who said he would hunt and kill and homosexual who tries to escape Gambia and seek asylum.

      - The FRC supports the Nazi inspired Nuremberg style laws in Russia that have resulted in the rape, torture, hunting, terrorizing, beating, imprisonment, silencing, and MURDER of LGBT adults, teens, and children.

      - The FRC spreads hate-filled demonizing an dehumanizing propaganda about LGBT people putting our lives and our freedom in danger.

@barbie H: REALLY? REALLY? You belong with the Duggars, and, YES, they DO HATE. Do you even have any idea how many CHRISTIAN gays there are? Have you EVER read what Jesus says, rather than embracing the vile excrement that comes from these thug heretics?

Just because you believe same sex marriage Is wrong doesn’t mean you hate gays. Calling this organization “anti gay hate” is wrong. They don’t hate anybody they are fighting for their religious beliefs. Fighting for the right to preserve the family unit as intended by the founding fathers. Biblical principles this country was founded on. In the same way gays have the right to fight for what they believe in so do Christians. The difference is when Christians want to preserve values, human life and the sanctity of marriage its hate and intolerance. When gays do it it’s applauded as free speech.

@cheryl: I may get discouraged but I will never be defeated. We may lose a battle here and there, but we will win this war. In the early ’80s I became a gay rights activist after Anita Bryant started her crusade saying that gay men were preying on little boys. I said to myself, ’I have had enough of this s**t!" I joined several groups in the DC Area, and served on two different boards for gay rights. Then, in the ’90s I had regular columns in a few small gay papers. I have always used my real name, although I am “out” selectively.

Graduate study at seminary was a later in life journey which I enjoyed. The value of that journey was and is how much I LEARNED about Scripture, and how much Scripture is skewed to a particular agenda. (Even my father played that game!)

The fact is homosexuality was not an issue among the various tribes until organized religion (Judaism) got into the mix. I find it amusing how most Reform and Conservative Rabbis ignore many of the ancient codes. But, it is common practice among those Jewish groups to review Biblical texts in order to reinterpret them to determine how they can relate to contemporary society.

Fundamentalist Christians really are not Christian in the orthodox understanding. Over the years their vile and vicious hatred has vexed me into full outrage. Their voices are not the voice of God or Christ. Jesus even talks about “men who are not called to marry” and about men “who come from their mother’s wombs as eunuchs”. (Gospel of Matthew, CH. 19). Eunuchs are never born.. They are created. Some scholars believe this remark made by Jesus indicates he was aware of “men who love men”.

If the loud mouth heretics REALLY wanted to be good Christians, they would be out helping so many of our needy citizens — a population that is growing exponentially. One more thought, then I will take a breath! IF — IF — life is a gift from God, then why should I not be allowed to enjoy MY gift as I see fit so long as I am not doing murder, robbing, raping and pillaging? It has long been held that sins of the flesh pale in comparison to sins of the spirit, and Heaven knows we have more sins of the spirit than anyone God could handle!

It is irrelevant how many arrogant, selfish, anti-gay bigots with uncivilized and inhuman superiority and control complexes voted to ILLEGALLY interfere in and control the personal lives of gays American against gay Americans free will violating gay Americans 1st, 5th, and 14th amendment rights -rights we are being taxed for but illegally denied because anti-gay people have an irrational and uneducated issue with it. MY life and MY rights are not supposed to be subjected to a popular vote of people who provide absolute NOTHING for me to live MY life. That is what it is called MY marriage, MY life, and MY rights. Anti-gay people do NOT have will over gay Americans. Gay Americans have free will. Get over it and mind your business. Get a life that doesn’t revolve around f@$king with any and all aspects of mine.

Did gay Americans get to vote on whether heterosexuals can get married? NO. Did Americans get to vote to end slavery? No. Did Americans get to vote to end segregation? No, a handful of judges did that. Did Americans get to vote to end the bans on interracial marriage nationwide as unconstitutional? No, a handful of judges did that and the time they did the number of states where it was still illegal is one less than the number where it is still illegal for gay couples to get married. Oh and the maps look the same by-the-way. The Supreme Court ruled that marriage is a 14th amendment civil right and according to civil rights act and the human rights act civil rights cannot be put up to a popular vote. That is why they are called rights. The Supreme Court also ruled that gay Americans are entitled to 1st, 5th, and 14th amendment rights AS WE ARE; not how arrogant, selfish, anti-gay bigots with uncivilized and inhuman superiority and control complexes allow and approve as if this were 1724 and gays are the slaves to heteros in need of permission from our hetero mastas to marry as was law in this country for blacks.

Those who have waged the war against gay Americans right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness do hate gays. The hate group this Duggar clown works for pushed demonizing and dehumanizing hate-filled propaganda to justify why gay couples shouldn’t partake in the 14th amendment civil right of marriage. Some of their speakers and members have called for gays to be executed just last year and one of their leaders said he would prefer to “export” homosexuals rather than “import” them un reference to gay Americans being allowed to sponsor the citizenship of their foreign born spouse, A right heterosexuals are given no or very little questions asked. Well that is no longer since the Supreme Court struct down section three of the Destruction of Marriage Act requiring the government to recognize marriages where they are legal for all federal purposes, rights, benefits, and privileges and immigration is a federal issue.

Marriage has NOTHING to do with children. It is not a requirement for a couple to have the ability nor the desire to have or raise children to obtain a marriage license. This point proven to be a legal fact in courts of law after courts of laws due to the FACT that heterosexual couples who cannot or choose not to have or raise children can get a government issued, not church, marriage license as well as the government recognition, rights, benefits and privileges that come with it and get to keep all of it many years after never having children either naturally, adopting, surrogacy, or in-vitro as well as raising them. My sister can’t have children, is she banned from marrying the man she loves? No. My friend decided she never wanted children and removed her ovaries. She can’t get pregnant by choice. Is her 12 year marriage to her loving and accepting of the fact husband null-in-void because they don’t and will never have children? No. Anti-gay AG Pam Bondi in Florida has been married twice, divorced twice, and is currently living in a heterosexual marriage that isn’t recognize for some legal international reason. Yet none of her marriages resulted in children,

4 month old Gabriel was taken from his adoptive lesbian moms and given back to his teenage bio-mom and dad and he died from neglect. 4 yo Zachary Dutro was killed by his anti-gay bio mother and her boyfriend – in other words raised by a man and a woman. 3yo Ronnie Paris was killed by his anti-gay “Christian” bio father and his mother watched. Jed from NC was born to heterosexual parents who chained him to a bed and barely fed him from a dog bowl on the floor until he was rescued at 3yo. He went through 29 families by the time he was 13 who were incapable of taking adequate care of him. When he was 14 the state was ready to give up on him and throw him away like trash into a mental hospital. It was two gay men, a couple, who rescued him from that fate of being permanently caged like an animal, gave him his 1st birthday party and raised him to be a civilized, well-mannered young adult who is now in college working to become a social worker so that what happened to him doesn’t happen again to the children of heterosexuals.

Anti-gay heterosexual parents, not gay ones, are the reason why there are thousands of LGBT youth living on the streets of America eating out of garbage cans, drug dealing and using, and prostituting themselves just to pay for a warm place to sleep and a scrap of food. Heterosexual parents, not gay ones, are the reason why there are thousands of children flooding the foster/adoption system abandoned, rejected, or neglected by their hetero parents. They age out and are also reduced to living on the streets of America eating out of garbage cans, drug dealing and using, and prostituting themselves just to pay for a warm place to sleep and a scrap of food.

There are MILLIONS of children being raised by two men or two women. This ship has sailed. Get over it. These anti-gay arguments are ones for kidnapping children because you deem their parents “inferior” and “incapable” of raising children the way you believe they should be raised just like Heinrich Himmler did to the parents of Europe and that will happen over your dead bodies, Anti-gay Inc.

You do not have the right to opinion on MY life. You provide nothing for me to live that life. You don’t even know me. You don’t know how I was raised. You don’t know what values my parents, family, and community have instilled in me. YOU HAVE NO SAY! NONE! And I will not have an open mind to someone who thinks they do. Get over it.

Here is what God has to say:

They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Romans 1:25 NIV
Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. Romans 1:26 NIV
In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Romans 1:27 NIV
Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind, so that they do what ought not to be done. Romans 1:28 NIV

I understand in advance that my comment may not please the majority of readers but please allow me to explain what so-called ‘Christian hate groups’ are trying to say here. What they are trying to highlight is that several states have already voted on this issue and have said ‘no’. Having this issue being decided by only a handful of justices for the entire nation is essentially nullifying the power of the people. Some may say that it is right to take power away from people who do not treat gay people equally. Voting against gay marriage does not automatically mean that you hate gay people. People who vote against gay marriage have carefully considered that if there is more than one definition of marriage that can be confusing legally and may not be the correct environment for children who need the influences of a mother and a father. They have the right to state their opinion as much as anyone else, regardless of it displeases a large majority. As a Catholic, I’ve had many interesting debates with gay friends and straight friends. The thing that helped us to understand each other was an open mind. I hope that others keep an open mind as well before labeling people with differing opinions as ‘haters’ and ‘homophobes’. Ignorance is the last thing this country needs.
