German Leader Angela Merkel: I Oppose Discrimination Against Gays, I Oppose Marriage For Gays
German Chancellor Angela Merkel might want to consult a dictionary – or an LGBT person – before discussing marriage and discrimination.
Angela Merkel says she absolutely opposes all forms of anti-LGBT discrimination, but she also opposes the right of same-sex couples to marry. The leader of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party and Germany’s Chancellor now for a decade, Merkel, generally perceived as stern, sat down with a YouTube star who has 2.6 million subscribers, LeFloid, for an interview.
“I’m someone who is very supportive of us eliminating all discrimination,” Merkel said, in response to a question about marriage equality. “We have come a long way; when I remember, 25 years ago, many people didn’t dare to say that they are gay or lesbian. Luckily we overcame this; you can enter a partnership, a civil partnership,” she added, according to a GayStarNews report.
“For me, personally, marriage is a man and a woman living together,” Merkel continued. “That is my concept, but I support civil partnerships,” she offered as an alternative.
“I support us not discriminating against them when it comes to taxes, and to remove any other discrimination wherever we may find it,” the 60-year old twice-married Lutheran claimed.
“I don’t want discrimination and [I want] equality, but I make a difference at some point,” Merkel told LeFloid, which, in other words, means she supports a separate-but-equal structure, which America learned decades ago is not equality at all.
“So you could say: no to discrimination, but we’ll keep differentiating between the two,” LeFloid, responded.
“No discrimination,” Merkel insisted, falsely. “Marriage is a man and a woman living together.”
The interview, in German with no English subtitles, has been viewed over 1.2 million times already.
