  • Broadway's Audra McDonald Just Took Down Indiana Gov. Mike Pence In A Glorious Twitter Rant

Superstar Audra McDonald's Twitter handle isn't @AudraEqualityMc for nothing. She just earned that "Equality" name ten times over.

Audra McDonald has won more Tony Awards than any other actor – six – and if there were a Tony for Twitter, the amazingly talented Broadway actress and singer would have just won one, too.

In response to Indiana Governor Mike Pence today signing a wide-sweeping anti-gay "religious freedom" – aka "license to discriminate" bill into law, McDonald went on a glorious Twitter rant and took down the conservative Republican governor.

Yes, she schooled him, and good.

    Take a look:

(Six tweets – refresh the page if they do not all appear.)

Bam! Thank you, Audra, from the bottom of my heart.

By the way, that photo up top? That's Audra McDonald in 2011:

“stick closer to how she was brought up than to the world of politics and entertaiment industry standards”

What’s that, a euphemism for homophobia? Homophobia is not acceptable in Fresno (a place I’m very familiar with) or anywhere else. Audra IS setting a great example for young people—-can you say the same for yourself, Patrick?

Those who are familiar with Audra and her family in Fresno, California would probably like to see her stick closer to how she was brought up than to the world of politics and entertaiment industry standards. It would be a much greater witness and example for young people.

Yes, your hierarchy of options was perfect, Ms. Audra, but please, if you want the money to go to actually fighting the new law, give it locally. Freedom Indiana killed the antigay marriage amendment there and has been doing a good job fighting what nobody in Indiana politics thought anyone could make a hair’s difference on. I know the money will be more efficiently used. I do not live there nor am I a member of either HRC nor Freedom Indiana., I’ve just observed a lot.

Audra? Why not just take the money and don’t perform?

I hope she sends the money to Lambda Legal instead of HRC

I admit my limited knowledge of who is in the fight for LGBTQ rights, but now I am galvanized to do what I can, I admit I never heard of Audra McDonald but I will quickly learn more about this spokeswoman who stands firm to justice and equality. She is a force to do good. I, too, will boycott Indiana. I reject all bigotry.

Love the sentiment, just not to the HRC. There are actual organizations that aren’t too busy throwing self-congratulatory dinners and balls with their rich celeb friends and paying themselves absorbent salaries and bonuses to donate to.

Its funny how these so called religious ignore the vary words of the lord of christianity Jesus teaching of loving everyone and treating everyone the same …he says to go in your closet to pray…not where you can be seen thinking your someone special for your religion….watch for wolf in sheeps clothing

Audra McDonald’s tweets are brilliant! It is time to make these states know that we will no longer just sit back quietly and allow them to make laws that will discriminate against us.

Took me three tries but I can see tweets now! Spectacular ..and she gets it, why doesn’t gay press understand. These are Freedom to Hate bills NOT ANTIGAY.. The law can be used against Anyone for Anything! SEE HERE FROM NCRM BLOG!
Lawmakers in the #Georgia House Judiciary Committee just voted to “table,” or drop, an anti-gay “religious freedom” bill. The legislation, one of an increasingly popular kind know as Religious Freedom Restoration Acts (RFRA), would have allowed anyone to discriminate against anyone else, merely by citing their sincerely held religious beliefs.

For Blacks, Women, Gays, and many others, the struggle for Civil Rights in the USA continues: Equality is the most fundamental American principle and value – “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal…”. Those words are the cornerstone of the moral and legal foundation of our country. Anybody who doesn’t like that is un-American. Pence is using Christianity as a mask to hide his real hatred of American values.

The only “freedom” the Republican party want is the right to refuse to sell food, education, healthcare, accommodation, transportation and other goods and services to gay people. With “deeply held religious belief” now legally enforceable, overturning the 14th Amendment to the Constitution, comes the right to turn away Jews, Muslims, atheists, African Americans, humanists, and “not the right kind of Christian”.

Muslim shop owners can now legally refuse to serve women unaccompanied by their husbands, women with their clitoris intact, educated women, women not obscured by the burqa, women who drove a car to the shop, non-Muslims, or anyone with an iTunes account. These are all “deeply held religious belief” enshrined in Qu’ran / Hadith / Shariah.

A supermarket employee whose religion teaches against smoking, drinking, contraception and divorce can refuse to sell cigarettes, alcohol or contraceptives to a customer, or anyone who is divorced, because of their religious belief against smoking, drinking, contraception and divorce. The supermarket will be unable to sack them for refusing to do their job.

The GOP disingenuously know SCOTUS may overturn all these laws, but want their acolytes to know “at least they tried” to write anti-gay animus into law.
