President Barack Obama, with Vice President Joe Biden by his side, just now noted that “more than 900 have died since Sandy Hook,” the massacre in Newtown, Connecticut that killed 20 children aged six and seven, and six adults.
“I will sign a directive giving law enforcement.. some of the tools they need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals,” the President said.
The President promised to sign immediately a 23 executive orders designed to help reduce gun violence and deaths.
“There’s no reason we can’t do this.”
The President called on Congress to ensure a background check is conducted for all gun sales, eliminating the gun show loophole, reinstate the assault weapons ban, and reduce the size of clips that “allowed the gunman in Aurora to shoot 70 people, killing 12,” he added.
Obama added the President Ronald Reagan supported a ban on military style assault weapons.
“Like most Americans I believe the Second Amendment ensures the right of Americans to bear arms,” the President said.
The President noted pundits and special interests would call it a “tyrannical all out assault on liberty, not because that’s true… but because they want to gin up ratings.”
Stay tuned — we’ll have the full video and text of the President’s address shortly.
