Attention, Members Of The Media: Here’s Why FRC Is Labeled A ‘Hate Group’

by David Badash on August 16, 2012

in Bigotry Watch,Civil Rights,Discrimination,News,Politics

As a hardworking journalist, I am sick to death of well-paid mainstream media journalists coasting on the work — blatantly false work — of others. It’s time for you folks to start actually doing your own damn work. Try out the Google machine every once in a while and actually go to the source rather than copying what everyone else says. You folks got it totally wrong with the Chick-Fil-A debacle, let’s not screw this up too, OK?

So, direct from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), here is why the Family Research Council (FRC), and 17 other anti-gay organizations, are labeled anti-gay hate groups.

It’s not because they “defend the family and stand for traditional orthodox Christianity,” as FRC president Tony Perkins lied on Fox News today.

Direct from the Southern Poverty Law Center:

The Family Research Council (FRC) bills itself as “the leading voice for the family in our nation’s halls of power,” but its real specialty is defaming gays and lesbians. The FRC often makes false claims about the LGBT community based on discredited research and junk science. The intention is to denigrate LGBT people in its battles against same-sex marriage, hate crimes laws, anti-bullying programs and the repeal of the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

To make the case that the LGBT community is a threat to American society, the FRC employs a number of “policy experts” whose “research” has allowed the FRC to be extremely active politically in shaping public debate. Its research fellows and leaders often testify before Congress and appear in the mainstream media. It also works at the grassroots level, conducting outreach to pastors in an effort to “transform the culture.”

It’s not that the FRC stands for so-called “traditional” marriage. They are welcome to do that. It’s that the Family Research Council spreads lies and uses junk science that has been thoroughly discredited by practically every major medical organization to do so.

More from the SPLC about the Family Research Council:

In Its Own Words
“Gaining access to children has been a long-term goal of the homosexual movement.”
— Robert Knight, FRC director of cultural studies, and Frank York, 1999

“[Homosexuality] … embodies a deep-seated hatred against true religion.”
— Steven Schwalm, FRC senior writer and analyst, in “Desecrating Corpus Christi,” 1999

“One of the primary goals of the homosexual rights movement is to abolish all age of consent laws and to eventually recognize pedophiles as the ‘prophets’ of a new sexual order.”
-1999 FRC pamphlet, Homosexual Activists Work to Normalize Sex with Boys.

“[T]he evidence indicates that disproportionate numbers of gay men seek adolescent males or boys as sexual partners.”
— Timothy Dailey, senior research fellow, “Homosexuality and Child Sexual Abuse,” 2002

“While activists like to claim that pedophilia is a completely distinct orientation from homosexuality, evidence shows a disproportionate overlap between the two. … It is a homosexual problem.”
— FRC President Tony Perkins, FRC website, 2010

Do you get the picture now?

Defending “traditional” marriage doesn’t make you a hate group. Lying about a group of people makes you a hate group.

Any questions?

(The SPLC has an additional 2373 words on the background of the Family Research Council explaining why they are labeled an anti-gay hate group.)

A terrific and much-needed summary. But is this being preached to the choir or is the information actually getting out to the media institutions that need to read this? Is GLAAD working on this? HRC?

So an FRC guard ( and good thing they have the good sense to guard themselves) gets grazed by a bullet in the arm … What about the countless gays that get attacked and murdered each year? Is the FRC absolved of any responsibility for spreading lies, hatred and animus about gay people? Have they no shame for demonizing an entire population of people simply for who they are? Do they idolize Hitler who specialized in this sort of demonization of minority groups?

The FRC has been playing eith fire for a long time; I am not surprised that they are going to get burned. They know in their hearts they have nothing to do with being pro "family" and everything to do with trying to destroy gay families. THE FRC defines evil hypocrisy and bigotry and they have nothing left but to play the victim card. Who has more credibility Tony, a serial liar like you or the extremely well respected Southern Poverty Law Center?

I would urge the FRC to do some soul searching and ask if focusing on hate and being bigots is really the best use of their limited time on this planet; after all, they may end up alone and dead in a car like the notorious Cherrios arsonist did this week. I would also advise the FRC that there is this thing called the "internet" now, and this thing called "Google" which allows instant access to the truth, should anyone seek it. Hiding behind religion to bully, dehumanize and murder those who were born differently will no longer fly; Religion is the new KKK white cape, a way to hide from the truth of the obcene crimes you are promoting, but we are onto it. The more FC invokes "religion" as a defense the more indefensible they look as God and Jesus and the bible and true Christianity do not promote hate; it is only charlatans, grifters, opportunists and bigots like Tony Perkins that promote hate for a living.

Wow – "hardworking journalist" does nothing but copy and paste pages from the SPLC. Did you independently confirm these quotes? Did the FRC offer evidence to support them, or do you just assume that because the quotes are critical of homosexuals, they are automatically untrue?

Of course you didn't ask any of these questions – you don't want to hear the answers.

Robroberts2009 August 17, 2012 at 12:05 am

Hey "readtheshrill2" — nice attempt at damage control for the Family Research Council you troll.

Everybody that has followed the FRC knows they are a hate group — we don't need it confirmed by the SLPC.

Your comments here and pathetic attempt at "spin" are unwelcome here. poof! be gone!

All forms of bullying non-acceptance of gay human beings properly considered are hateful. The heterosupremacist delusion is no better than the master race delusion. Homosexuality is a universally occurring normal human variant. To describe all gay people as "lesser," and to legislate against their equality and/or to propagandize against them and their legal equality is indeed hate, rooted in irrational, bullying non-acceptance. There always have been, are, and will be long-term same-sex couples, including some raising children. To legally disadvantage them because of heterosupremacists' ridiculous fantasies of inherent superiority is hateful. Whole countries are long past having given LGBT citizens equal rights. It is hateful to argue against marriage equality for gay couples. We should not passively accept that what is hate speech against us, is not hate speech, when it is hate speech.

And let's not forget that FRC's Peter Sprigg recommended on national television that gays & lesbians be jailed and/or deported from the US. If mainstream news sources are going to continue to host flat-out bigots as 'the other side' then we, as individuals, have an absolute obligation to inform the public about the true nature of these hate groups and their leaders. It's not difficult, as David just capably demonstrated, because their own words and actions incriminate them. I'll definitely be sharing this article on Facebook as well as info about Tony Perkin's ties to the KKK. Only once the mainstream media finds itself incapable of hiding the true credentials of these bigots will they stop trying to pass them off as reputable, credible voices. It's way past time to turn up the volume on FRC and its ilk.
