Brand New Poll Shows Gov. Pat McCrory’s HB2 Is Extremely Unpopular – And So Is He
North Carolina’s GOP Governor in Hot Water Over Anti-LGBT Law
A just-released poll finds Gov. Pat McCrory’s HB2 more unpopular than ever. Barely more than one in three voters (35%) support the sweeping anti-LGBT bill. And while less than half oppose it (44%), exactly 50 percent of voters want HB2 repealed, with just 38 percent saying it should stand.
Public Policy Polling says voters believe HB2 is “hurting the state both economically and in terms of its national reputation,†and they “don’t believe it’s achieving its stated purpose of making the state safer.â€
The law was framed as necessary to protect girls and women especially, but just 28 percent of women voters think it does.
If Governor McCrory thought the uproar would dissipate quickly, he was mistaken.
“Any thought that anger over HB2 would subside with time can be put aside,†said Dean Debnam, President of Public Policy Polling. “Voters still think it’s having a very bad impact on the state, and they want it repealed.â€
Gov. McCrory is paying a price for standing by HB2. Running for re-election against Democratic Attorney General Roy Cooper, they’re now tied 41-41 in the polls.
McCrory’s unpopularity rating is now at 49 percent, “making it 35 months in a row now we’ve found him under water in our polling,†PPP reports.
