Former Trump advisor and long-time friend Roger Stone has just been convicted by a jury of lying to Congress, obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and other charges – seven out of seven in all.
Stone’s prosecution was the last one brought by Robert Mueller, and it is believed he may have lied in an attempt to protect President Donald Trump.
“In hopes of keeping himself out of prison, Stone’s defense team urged jurors to treat his case as a referendum not on him but on Mueller’s entire Russia investigation,” The Washington Post reports.
If jurors followed that suggestion, the guilty verdict is even more damning.
Stone in theory could face 50 years in jail, but it is expected prosecutors will ask for far less. Stone could also receive a pardon from President Trump, in an attempt to protect his possibly former associate and in an attempt to try to discredit the Mueller investigation.
