Warren Wins Endorsement of Progressive Organization That Backed Sanders in ’16

A top progressive organization that backed Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the 2016 presidential primary over Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday announced it is endorsing Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) for the Democratic presidential nomination.

The Working Families Party’s endorsement, The New York Times reports, is “a boon to her candidacy as she attempts to position herself as the main challenger to former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr.”

The Times adds that “Warren continues to make inroads among the party’s progressive base.” And it call the endorsement “one of the few by an influential progressive organization this early in the primary,” which “is sure to turn heads among left-leaning Democrats who are desperate to defeat the current front-runner, Mr. Biden, in a primary election where their party’s ideological future is at stake.”

Tens of thousands of  Working Families Party members chose to throw their weight behind Sen. Warren on the first ballet, with the Massachusetts Democrat earning more than 60 percent of the vote.

“Senator Warren knows how to kick Wall Street kleptocrats where it hurts, and she’s got some truly visionary plans to make this country work for the many,” Working Families Party’s national director Maurice Mitchell said.
