The outrage is palpable as Americans are learning Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross threatened to fire top National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) officials after the agency’s Birmingham office posted this tweet effectively countering President Donald Trump’s lie that Alabama was in the path of Hurricane Dorian:
— NWS Birmingham (@NWSBirmingham) September 1, 2019
On Friday, “Ross phoned Neil Jacobs, the acting administrator of NOAA, from Greece where the secretary was traveling for meetings and instructed Dr. Jacobs to fix the agency’s perceived contradiction of the president,” The New York Times reports.
“Dr. Jacobs objected to the demand and was told that the political staff at NOAA would be fired if the situation was not fixed, according to the three individuals, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the episode. Unlike career government employees, political staff are appointed by the administration. They usually include a handful of top officials, such as Dr. Jacobs, and their aides.”
Many across the nation were outraged when the NOAA issued a rare – and unsigned – statement apparently rejecting the Birmingham NOAA tweet and insisting – despite zero evidence – that the President was correct and Alabama was in the projected line of Hurricane Dorian’s wrath. Alabama was never impacted.
Ross, who as Commerce Secretary oversees the National Weather Service (NWS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He is also responsible for a tremendous amount of factual data and reports, as economist and professor Justin Wolfers, who is calling for Ross’ firing, notes:
This is an outrage and Wilbur Ross should be fired. Or if he was directed to do this by the White House, he should have resigned.
Wilbur Ross is also responsible for the Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Census, and if bad but truthful numbers displease him, we’re in trouble. https://t.co/Kj73RtYQtf
— Justin Wolfers (@JustinWolfers) September 9, 2019
On social media many others also called for Ross to be fired – or should resign – over the politicization of the NOAA and the threat:
Nothing good that can come from pushing scientists to lie about science.
— Justin Wolfers (@JustinWolfers) September 9, 2019
This is only the most recent among the dozens of reasons why Wilbur Ross should go. Someone please wake him up and tell him its time to go home. https://t.co/1LMWmi8xSU

Congressional Democrats should be calling on Wilbur Ross to resign immediately. If he refuses they should impeach him. What he’s accused of is unbelievably dangerous and a flagrant misuse of power

Wilbur Ross should be fired immediately. Instead, Trump will reward this high toadying. https://t.co/oQssenyJGU

‘Ranting Toddler’: GOP Congressman Gets Clobbered Online After He Turns Lewandowski Hearing Into a ‘Clown Show’
Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), the ranking Republican member on the House Judiciary Committee, was brutally mocked on Tuesday after he unleashed a bizarre rant during the testimony of former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
Collins began his testimony by blasting Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY) for hauling Lewandowski before the committee.
“Here we go again,” Collins complained in an animated opening statement. “We had Mr. Mueller here, and long day, and it did not go well for what you have proclaimed for over one year and nine months, and what you claim is impeachment criteria. And now, the members have said that the president should be impeached, and so why are we investigating?”
“So what we are going to do so drag this committee through the oversight hearings and talk about things that have been talked ad nauseam and ad nauseam and put up the filters and say what it is and is not, and then we will try to imply that this president shouldn’t be president,” the congressman ranted.
#DougCollins sounds like a southern revival preacher not a member of Congress. He should go back to GA and back to peddling religion.

Did Rep Doug Collins have a stroke during the first sentence of his opening statement? “….akababoboo.”

— J. Walker Sanderson (@JwSanderson2019) September 17, 2019
Doug Collins sure preaches a weak argument. He obviously does not understand that history is recording his stand for all time. He and the rest of his GOP comrades will be the cockroaches under Trump’s heel just like Hitler’s henchmen are remembered today. The GOP is dead.

Corey Lewandowski ‘Filibusters’ House Judiciary Committee as Republicans Stonewall – and Trump Tweets Praise
Former – and fired – Trump campaign director Corey Lewandowski is testifying before the Judiciary Committee in the House’s first official impeachment inquiry. Lewandowski played his part perfectly: a clown, an obfuscator, a disruptor, a disrespectful buffoon, and an instigator.
Just minutes into the hearing, Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler accused Lewandowski – who is still close to President Trump and considering a run for the U.S. Senate – of filibustering.
Happening now: Corey Lewandowski’s opening statement to the House Judiciary Committee is a low budget way of cutting an ad for his upcoming New Hampshire Senate race.
— Joyce Alene (@JoyceWhiteVance) September 17, 2019
President Trump loved it. About a half hour into the proceedings, Trump tweeted out praise for his friend and former advisor.
Such a beautiful Opening Statement by Corey Lewandowski! Thank you Corey! @CLewandowski_
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 17, 2019
Lewandoweski refused to answer questions, standing by the White House counsel’s letter which claims that Lewandowski’s “conversations with the President and with senior advisers to the President are protected from disclosure by long-settled principles protecting Executive Branch confidentiality interest.”
Legal experts disagree, given that Lewandowski has never been a White House or even a federal government employee.
This is exactly what it means to be prepared for obstructing Congress. https://t.co/5qgIPevAPl
— Maya Wiley (@mayawiley) September 17, 2019
Indeed, Lewandowski refused to answer questions, saying, “I am respecting the White House’s decision” to invoke executive privilege.

Some more responses:
Lewandowski is now sparring with Rep. Jackson Lee.
“I’d be happy to answer your question or you can just have a conversation by yourself,” he says.
She’s not impressed. “This is the House Judiciary, not a house party.”
— Chris Megerian (@ChrisMegerian) September 17, 2019
Lewandowski now asking Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Tex.) to read the portion of the Mueller report she’s referring to, even though it’s projected on a screen for him to read.
— Aaron Blake (@AaronBlake) September 17, 2019
Trump just cheered Corey Lewandowski’s stonewalling on his behalf.

Pence Said Being Gay Is ‘Learned Behavior’ or a ‘Choice’ as He Opposed Granting LGBT People Rights in the ’90s
Despite the White House’s recent false claims that Vice President Mike Pence is not anti-gay, a new investigation by CNN proves the conservative Christian Republican politician has a record of anti-gay comments and policies even worse than previously known.
In the early 1990’s Pence not only advocated against a Lafayette, Indiana city council referendum that would have been the first in his home state to grant anti-discrimination protections to gay people, but Pence went even farther than just opposing the proposed ordinance.
Falsely calling homosexuality is a “choice” or a “learned behavior,” Pence – then president of a conservative think tank, Indiana Policy Review Foundation – advocated against allowing gay people to be given any minority status at all.
“Once you identify homosexuals as a minority, then by definition they would need to be afforded constitutional protection,” Pence wrote. “Up to this point, our legal tradition in America has drawn a line over those things. I do not choose whether I am a black American … the great vast majority of the psychological community says homosexuality at a very minimum is a choice by the individual, and at the maximum, is a learned behavior.”
Pence also argued that claiming gay people are worthy of protecting would unlock “a Pandora’s Box of legal rights and legal difficulties.”
CNN notes that in the early 1990’s public opinion was about evenly split on whether gay people should be granted civil rights protections. And the American Psychological Association “said in 1992 that data did not support the view that homosexuality was a choice and studies at the time in the 1990s suggested homosexuality was biological and genetic.”
Pence called granting gay people protections “a very bad move in public policy.”
Later, as a U.S. Congressman, Pence would go on to advocate for harmful conversion therapy and against funding programs to help people with HIV/AIDS.
And as vice president, Pence played a “leading role” in drafting President Trump’s ban on transgender service members.
Meanwhile, as recently as 2016, then-governor Pence questioned whether LGBT protections were “necessary or even possible.”
