FBI Director Christopher Wray on Tuesday testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee, telling Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) the majority of domestic terrorism cases this year are motivated by white supremacist violence.
The Director says the Bureau this year has made about 100 arrests in international terrorism cases, which include home-grown terrorism, and about 100 arrests in domestic terrorism cases.
“A majority of the domestic terrorism cases we’ve investigated are motivated by some version of what you might call white supremacist violence,” Wray told Chairman Graham.
Just last week three members of a white supremacist group were sentenced for violence at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville and events in California, as NBC News reported.
“These defendants, motivated by hateful ideology, incited and committed acts of violence in Charlottesville, as well at other purported political rallies in California,” U.S. Attorney Thomas T. Cullen said in a statement. “They were not interested in peaceful protest or lawful First Amendment expression; instead, they intended to provoke and engage in street battles with those that they perceived as their enemies.”
And Voice of America, a U.S. government funded news agency, reported this weekend that “Signs, fliers and other notices with racist language are increasingly being found at colleges and universities in the United States, a new report finds.”
