Texas Moving Closer to Passing Anti-LGBT ‘Save Chick-fil-A’ Bill Giving Special Religious Rights to Discriminate

The Texas House of Representatives is currently debating – or trying to – a legislation designed to further marginalize LGBTQ people. Dubbed the “Save Chick-fil-A” bill, it was drafted in large part in response to local governments banning the fast food purveyor from airport food courts in response to the company’s continuing financial support of anti-LGBT organizations.

If the debate moves forward, and if a vote is taken and the bill is passed, the “Save Chick-fil-A” bill, SB 1978, will head to Republican Governor Greg Abbott’s desk. He is fully expected to sign it.

The bill would protect people, businesses, and organizations who donate to anti-LGBTQ organizations from any negative governmental actions – such as being banned from a food court, for example.

In other words, it is a clear “license to discriminate.”

At this minute Democrats are attempting to derail the bill by challenging what they say is the unconstitutional method the bill came to the House floor. Essentially, not enough members were present in the committee last week when the bill was forwarded to the full House for a vote.

That technicality may kill the bill, at least temporarily, by sending it back to committee. Texas’ legislative session ends in one week, at 11:59 PM Sunday. The bill would have to be resent to the full House floor voted on, and passed by then to go to the governor.

Conservatives are literally in a race against time to further discriminate against LGBTQ people in the Lone Star state.

UPDATE: The bill received a floor vote and passed to the third reading. It now needs one more House vote, then a final Senate vote, and it can go to the governor’s desk.
