House Subpoenas Mnuchin and IRS Chief After Failure to Release Trump Tax Returns

The House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Ricard Neal has just sent subpoenas to Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig after they failed to follow a law that requires the IRS to hand over the tax returns of any U.S. individual when asked by the Committee Chair, according to The New York Times.

Chairman Neal requested six years of President Donald Trump’s tax returns. Sec. Mnuchin, after dragging out his response for weeks, ultimately refused.

“After reviewing the options available to me, and upon the advice of counsel, I issued a subpoena today to the secretary of the Treasury and the commissioner of the I.R.S. for six years of personal and business returns,” Chairman Neal said. “While I do not take this step lightly, I believe this action gives us the best opportunity to succeed and obtain the requested material.”

Neal has given the two Trump administration officials one week, until next Friday, to submit the tax returns or face legal action, The Washington Post reports.
