Trump Hires Constitutional Law Attorney to Block Democrats From Obtaining His Tax Returns

President Donald Trump has retained a constitutional law attorney to fight Democrats who this week officially filed to obtain his tax returns. Representing President Trump is William Consovoy, who also represented him in his emoluments clause case.

In a 4-page letter to Trump’s hand-picked U.S. Treasury general counsel, Consovoy says the Democrats’ request is a “misguided attempt to politicize the administration of the tax laws,” and “will not succeed.”

Consovoy writes that House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Richard Neal’s request “flouts…fundamental constitutional constraints.”

And he suggests the House Ways and Means Committee is requesting the President’s tax returns to punish him  for his “First Amendment freedoms” to free speech, “political belief,” and “association.”

Consovoy also says Ways and Means has “no legitimate committee purpose,” which Chairman Neal already addressed this week.
