‘This Is Cowardice’: Many Outraged After ‘Feckless’ Steny Hoyer Declares ‘Impeachment’ Still ‘Not Worthwhile’

Many are outraged after Democratic House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD) declared that even after everything revealed in the Mueller report, impeachment of President Donald Trump is off the table.
“Based on what we have seen to date, going forward on impeachment is not worthwhile at this point,” Leader Hoyer told CNN’s Dana Bash. “Very frankly, there is an election in 18 months and the American people will make a judgement.”
Hoyer is the second most-powerful Democrat in the House of Representatives, behind Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
The redacted Mueller report makes clear President Trump engaged in possible obstruction on at least ten separate occasions. More importantly, it also makes clear that Mueller laid out the case for Congress to impeach Trump, because DOJ regulations bar indicting a sitting president.

Here’s how many are responding to this new development:
Truly amazing to see the Democrats extend their theory of “People will get mad at us if we do the things we’re supposed to believe in” to encompass not just things like poverty relief or healthcare but the basic requirements of the constitution

this is an abdication of constitutional responsibility https://t.co/kKqG06SGIv

This is cowardice. Impeachment hearings are plainly the right thing to do, even if the Senate won’t convict. This is a simple ask and a basic responsibility and a party incapable of fulfilling it can’t be relied on to address the more daunting challenges we face. https://t.co/WWvTgqg064

If you want to depress Dem turnout in 2020 after millions of people worked their asses off to put give you the power to put a check on Trump last November, go ahead and act like a feckless coward, Steny
Americans like winners and you are making Trump into a fucking superhero https://t.co/I6wgLTlUWS
— digby (@digby56) April 18, 2019
what if the American people want you to impeach? what’s the bat signal for that?
How many calls to your office do we need to make? https://t.co/2vSDtwMOMD

Steny Hoyer should be removed from House leadership. https://t.co/S6fF5BAcXH

The Democratic House leadership has this amazing combination of “savvy” and stone-cold dumbassery. They think they’re playing chess where everyone else is playing checkers, but they’re playing Hungry Hungry Hippos and two of the hippos are broken. https://t.co/xpBQSJkxf4

Imagine being a member of Congress and three months into a term you’ve been elected to serve, you punt your constitutional responsibilities to voters a year and a half from now https://t.co/djcFtbkY98

I think @StenyHoyer we are going to need a better explanation than that. If you want us to fight, we need to see you do it first
— Nancy Lee Grahn (@NancyLeeGrahn) April 18, 2019
“i’m not going to do the thing that is literally my job because maybe our fucked up election system will accidentally work a year and a half from now” https://t.co/IC3a1KpNP3

Rehash of “let the people decide” bullshit. Impeach now! DOJ wont do the job, let’s put a check on the imbalance!
— Andrew Fine (@AFineBlogger) April 18, 2019
Everyone who thinks being attacked in impeachment hearings would galvanize support for Trump: What evidence have we seen to support that in the 2+ years of negative press he’s received in office? Why hasn’t any of that galvanized support?
— Osita Nwanevu (@OsitaNwanevu) April 18, 2019
Steny is wrong. Any Democrat that doesn’t find their spine today will pay at the polls.
— Jason Haddix (@doctor_eon) April 18, 2019
the single biggest thing to understand about the democratic party is that it actually has no desire to hold, exercise, or be accountable for having power https://t.co/yCFfMIvONU
— Patrick Blanchfield (@PatBlanchfield) April 18, 2019
Yeah, well, that’s crap.
— Freeman (@NewWorldReality) April 18, 2019
Eighteen months! Very frankly, your TERM is only 24 months! By that standard you’re literally never going to be in a position to do the job you took an oath to do. https://t.co/f0DDuJiwEr
— Tom Scocca (@tomscocca) April 18, 2019
This is infuriating.
Time to start calling your Representatives.
Impeachment hearings must be called or we as a nation will have an outlaw Presidency. https://t.co/Jwvia99fIj
