DOJ Announces Barr Will Not Recuse

Attorney General William Barr will not recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller probe, despite having written a 19-page memo stating he does not believe President Donald Trump engaged in obstruction of justice for firing FBI Director Jim Comey.

“Following General Barr’s confirmation, senior career ethics officials advised that General Barr should not recuse himself from the Special Counsel’s investigation, Dept. of Justice spokesperson Kerri Kupec said in a statement, CNN reports. “Consistent with that advice, General Barr has decided not to recuse.”

Barr was not asked for his opinion, but sent the memo, unsolicited, in a manner critics say was an audition for the job of Attorney General, something Trump is known to like.

Barr is Trump’s hand-picked replacement for Jeff Sessions, who he fired after two years of publicly and privately attacking over his decision to recuse from the Mueller investigation.
