DHS Chief Sends ‘Profound Gratitude’ to Central American ‘Allies’ – Hours After Trump Threatens to Close Border Because of Them
President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Chief Kirstjen Nielsen appear to be on exact opposite sides.
During his explosive overnight 12-hour diatribe attacking everything from the Mueller investigation to the “treasonous” FBI to the Jussie Smollett case to former President Bill Clinton, President Trump early Thursday morning unleashed his venom on the Central American countries to our nation’s south.
“Mexico is doing NOTHING to help stop the flow of illegal immigrants to our Country. They are all talk and no action,” Trump tweeted at 6:24 AM.
“Likewise, Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador have taken our money for years, and do Nothing. The Dems don’t care, such BAD laws. May close the Southern Border!” he threatened, once again, out of the blue.

So it’s certainly surprising to see Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen just six hours and eight minutes later also take to Twitter to send the exact opposite message.
“I would like to extend my profound gratitude to our Central American allies Honduras, Guatemala & El Salvador—as well as [US Embassy Honduras] and [the US Ambassador to Honduras] —for their commitment to our common cause of secure borders & more orderly migration flows,” Nielsen tweeted.

Secretary Nielsen’s tweet was part of a long thread, started Wednesday, explaining she is currently in Honduras “to meet with security leaders.”
She blamed illegal immigration into the U.S. not on Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador – as Trump just did – but on “outdated laws, misguided court decisions & congressional inaction.”
On Wednesday she posted this tweet announcing what she calls “a HISTORIC agreement to confront the root causes of the crisis on our border.”
“Working with Central American govts to increase security & prosperity in the region has been one of my greatest priorities,” Nielsen claimed:
I’m pleased to announce the U.S. & our Northern Triangle allies have reached a HISTORIC agreement to confront the root causes of the crisis on our border. Nielsen even changed her language, one hour ago referring not to “illegal immigration,” but “irregular migration,” snd earlier referring (above) to “orderly migration flows.”
Through expanded intelligence sharing & strengthened border security, we are working more closely with Central American leaders to address irregular migration. Together we will combat human trafficking, child smuggling & the criminals & drug cartels poisoning our communities. pic.twitter.com/0jR1GKxCIq

It remains unclear if President Trump is aware of the Secretary’s actions.
