Virginia Governor Apologizes for Blackface and KKK Robe Yearbook Photo

Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam early Friday evening issued a statement acknowledging that he appears in a racist and offensive photo that appears on his medical school yearbook page, and apologized to the people of his state.

Governor Northam did not offer to resign, saying instead, “I recognize that it will take time and serious effort to heal the damage this conduct has caused.”

The Virginan-Pilot published the photo from the Governor’s 1984 yearbook, which elicited immediate calls from liberals and conservatives for him to resign.

The governor’s statement does not say if he is the man in blackface or the one in the KKK robe and hat.
