Mark Herring, Virginia’s Democratic Attorney General, has just admitted he wore blackface at a college party in 1980, according to his statement (below.)
“In 1980, when I was a 19-year-old undergraduate in college, some friends suggested we attend a party dressed like rappers we listened to at the time,” he writes, adding: “we dressed up and put on wigs and brown makeup.”
The Washington Post, while not reporting on the blackface, reports that Herring held an emergency closed-door meeting Wednesday morning with the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus, who left “stone faced” and “went directly into a meeting at the Capitol building. They said nothing and ignored a reporter who asked if they supported Herring.”
Virginia Democrats are enmeshed in multiple scandals. Governor Ralph Northam admitted to having a photo on his medical school yearbook page showing two men, one in blackface and one in a KKK outfit, including hood.
Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax has been accused of sexual misconduct, which he denies.
Were Northam to exit the governor’s office, and Fairfax be unable to take his place, Herring, at least on paper, would be next in line.
If all succumb to the scandals, Virginia’s Republican Speaker of the House, Kirk Cox, would become Governor of Virginia.
