Northam Posts Video Saying He’s ‘Committed’ to Serving Out His Term Despite Racist Photo and Calls to Resign

Virginia Democratic Governor Ralph Northam says he is “committed” to regaining the trust of his constituents and will serve out the remainder of his term. Earlier Friday a photo from Northam’s medical school yearbook page that shows two people, one in blackface and one in a KKK uniform, complete with hood, was published. Northam admitted he is one of the two people in the photo but did not say which.

“That photo, and the racist and offensive attitudes it represents, does not reflect that person that I am today,” the governor says in the just-released video, “or the way that I have conducted myself as a soldier, a doctor, and a public servant.”

Response to the photo has been swift and seems nearly-unanimous, with many on the left and right calling for Northam to resign.

Among them, Senator Kamala Harris and former HUD Secretary Julián Castro, both running for the Democratic nomination for president.

“I am deeply sorry,” Northam says.
