President Donald Trump is applauding a lawsuit filed on behalf of Nick Sandmann, the Covington Catholic high school student who stood before a Native American who was exercising his First Amendment rights of religion and to protest. Video of Sandmann and his fellow classmates went viral, with many seeing their actions as disrespectful.
Sandmann and his family are suing The Washington Post for $250 million, according to USA Today.
“The suit points to ‘no less than six false and defamatory articles’ concerning Nick published by The Post,” USA Today reports.
The President of the United States is choosing to stand with the Sandmanns in what could be a huge First Amendment case.
“Go get them Nick. Fake News!” Trump tweeted Wednesday morning.
President Trump has a longstanding battle in his mind against the Washington Post, and its owner, Jeff Bezos.
Minutes earlier, Trump, despite having taken an oath to “preserve, protect and defend the Constitution,” launched one of his many attacks on the First Amendment and the free press, falsely claiming it “has never been more dishonest than it is today.”
He claims he has kept the press in business and warned that when he leaves office, “they all go BUST!”
That, too, of course is false.
