Vice President Mike Pence delivered remarks praising President Donald Trump and his leadership in the war on terror in a speech Wednesday at the U.S. State Department. “ISIS has been defeated,” the Vice President declared.
But, as The Washington Post reports, the Vice President made no mention or acknowledgment of the four U.S. service members killed hours earlier by ISIS terrorists.
“Thanks to the leadership of this Commander in Chief and the courage and sacrifice of our armed forces, we are now actually able to begin to hand off the fight against ISIS in Syria to our coalition partners,” the Vice President told the Global Chiefs of Mission conference, “prompting applause from the 184 diplomats in the audience,” the Post notes.
“And we are bringing our troops home. The caliphate has crumbled, and ISIS has been defeated.”
The Vice President appears to have been aware of the attack by ISIS, which was reported hours earlier. His spokesperson posted this tweet “around” the time of his speech at the State Dept.
“The Islamic State asserted responsibility Wednesday for a suicide blast in the U.S.-patrolled Syrian city of Manbij, the first such attack since President Trump said American forces would withdraw from the country because the militant group has been largely defeated,” The Post said in a separate report.
The Vice President also made no mention of the federal government shutdown by Republicans. State Dept. workers at Wednesday’s event are not being paid.
