Trump Firing Comey Sparked FBI Counterintel Investigation to Determine if He Was Working for Russia: NY Times

A bombshell New York Times report reveals President Donald Trump’s own firing of Jim Comey as FBI Director sparked the Bureau to initiate a counterintelligence investigation to determine if the President of the United States was working on behalf of a hostile foreign power, namely Russia.

That investigation was quickly handed over to Robert Mueller when he was hired as Special Counsel.

“In the days after President Trump fired James B. Comey as F.B.I. director, law enforcement officials became so concerned by the president’s behavior that they began investigating whether he had been working on behalf of Russia against American interests, according to former law enforcement officials and others familiar with the investigation,” The Times reports.

“The inquiry carried explosive implications. Counterintelligence investigators had to consider whether the president’s own actions constituted a possible threat to national security. Agents also sought to determine whether Mr. Trump was knowingly working for Russia or had unwittingly fallen under Moscow’s influence.”

In addition to determining whether or not the President was working for Russia, the FBI also opened a criminal investigation to determine if the President’s firing of Comey was obstruction of justice.

The investigation has not concluded and the public has not been notified of the final results.
