Supreme Court Allows Trump to Begin Banning Transgender Service Members

In a 5-4 vote the U.S Supreme Court has just told the Trump administration that despite current injunctions at the appeals court level, it can begin to enforce its ban on transgender service members. The court has not stated if it will take up the cases currently in lower courts. The stay by the Supreme Court is theoretically temporary, and veers from precedent.

Buzzfeed’s Chris Geidner posts the legal docs:

The administration has made no valid case for its desire to discharge all or nearly all transgender troops, and not allow new recruits who are transgender.

Lower courts ruled the ban is constitutional.

Here’s MSNBC’s Pete Williams explaining what just happened. He notes it’s a surprising move.

Some experts note the new makeup of the Supreme Court, with a strong conservative majority, led to this decision.
