Speaker Pelosi Wastes No Time – Sends Letter to President Trump Setting Date of State of the Union Address

Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday was elected to lead the U.S. House of Representatives, passed rules packages for how the Congress will operate, and passed a series of six bills to reopen the federal government.

Sometime in the midst of that very busy day she found time to set the date for President Donald Trump to deliver the State of the Union Address, and send him a letter inviting him to perform the constitutionally-mandated ritual.

“The Constitution established the legislative, executive and judicial branches as co-equal branches of government, to be a check and balance on each other,” Speaker Pelosi reminds President Trump. “The Constitution also calls for the President to ‘from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union.'”

“In the spirit of our Constitution, I invite you to deliver your State of the Union address before a Joint Session of Congress on Tuesday, January 29, 2019 in the House Chamber,” Pelosi writes (below). “I look forward to welcoming you to the Congress.”
