Pelosi to Trump: Deliver the State of the Union ‘In Writing’ Unless You End the Shutdown ‘This Week’

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has just sent President Donald Trump a letter (below) suggesting he deliver the State of the Union Address to Congress in writing instead of in a nationally-televised address if he has not ended the shutdown of the federal government by January 29.

Citing the Secret Service agents who are being forced to work without pay, the Speaker says the President’s constitutionally-mandated “Information of the State of the Union” should be in writing. She also cites historical precedence, noting “up until the presidency of Woodrow Wilson,” the State of the Union Addresses were delivered in writing.

Alternatively, Speaker Pelosi says she and the President could come up with a different date, after the shutdown, for him to come to Congress.
