In his farewell address, Rep. Mark Sanford (R-SC) warned of a Hitler-esque figure in the age of President Donald Trump, the South Carolina Post and Courier first reported.
Sanford summarized the 4,000 word missive. “One, thank you for your part in allowing my time in the arena of politics. It’s been an honor, and I am most appreciative,” he wrote.
“Two, we are headed for a shipwreck if we don’t change course,” Sanford continued.
Sanford goes on to praise civility as well as confirm his commitment to limited government. He cites the work of economic philosopher Friedrich Hayek, particularly his work, “The Road to Serfdom,” which warns of the government’s abuse of power—and how they can lead to the rise of strongmen dictators.
“Because as open political systems become cumbersome and inefficient, inevitably a strong man comes along and offers easy promises,” Sanford observes.
“He says that he can take care of it for us. People desperate for a change accept his offer. They have to give up a few freedoms in the equation to get more security. It doesn’t work out so well, as Hayek’s book in this instance is about the rise of Hitler in post-WWI German history,” Sanford says.
“I want to be clear and explicit that I am not likening Trump to Hitler, but the forces at play could lead to a future Hitler-like character if we don’t watch out,” Sanford warned.
“It must be remembered that another thing that Benjamin Franklin said was that he who trades his freedom for security, deserves neither. Indeed, how true.”

Erick Erickson on Pete Buttigieg: ‘His Understanding of Christianity Isn’t Very Deep or Serious’
Conservative evangelical personality and blogger Erick Erickson is at it again. The man who says he believes terrorist attacks occur because of God hates gay people just can’t help himself in a new Twitter rant regarding Vice President Mike Pence and 2020 presidential candidate Mayor Pete Buttigieg.
Note: VP Mike Pence is set to speak at an event hosted by Erick Erickson this week.
How do Episcopalians feel about that? https://t.co/V4PITKGMnE
— Matt McDermott (@mattmfm) July 31, 2019
His racist attack on Americans is right in line with President Donald Trump’s rants as well.
— Erick Erickson (@EWErickson) August 1, 2019
He aligns himself with people who call people like Senator Kamala Harris “salty,” to say the least:
Kamala Harris was super salty in post-debate interview last night about Tulsi Gabbard’s hit on her record as a prosecutor. Called herself a “top-tier candidate,” and belittled Gabbard’s poll numbers. https://t.co/MmCnfpbDxM
— Chuck Ross (@ChuckRossDC) August 1, 2019
Confession: while I appreciated Gabbard’s take down of Harris, I still do not find Gabbard to be a credible candidate. She’s just the next Ron Paul in waiting, but with fewer followers.

Five years ago, New Civil Rights Movement reported that Erickson was behind the nation’s “First National Gun Appreciation Day,” conveniently scheduled for Saturday, January 19, Robert E. Lee Day. Lee was the Civil War hero of the Confederate Army.
He throws support around hate wherever he goes, including retweeting this nonsense:
A transgender 3 year old is like a vegan cat.
We all know who’s making the lifestyle choices.

Paul Watkins Worked for a Hate Group – And Now He’s In Charge of Consumer Protection
Ahead of Tuesday’s congressional hearing on fintech regulation, consumer watchdog group Allied Progress released a new report on how Paul Watkins, Director of the CFPB’s Office of Innovation, has hidden his past work for an anti-LGBT hate group.
Since being installed by Mick Mulvaney last year to slash regulations as head of the CFPB’s Office of Innovation, Watkins has spearheaded the bureau’s no-action letter initiative, which would allow him to exempt industry from anti-discrimination laws that protect LGBT consumers.
The CFPB’s ‘No-Action’ letter proposal would make the recipient “immune from enforcement actions by any Federal or State authorities, as well as from lawsuits brought by private parties.”
Watkins is a conservative ideologue who has deep ties to anti-LGBT causes throughout his career. Watkins’ conservative credentials go back to his undergraduate years at Hillsdale College, consistently ranked by the Princeton Review as one of the least LGBT-friendly schools in the country. In law school, Watkins participated in the Blackstone Legal Fellowship, a program run by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which he later worked for as an attorney.
ADF is a Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group that has worked to legalize discrimination against the LGBTQ community for years. That may be why Watkins neglected to include it on his LinkedIn profile.
Today, Watkins is behind the CFPB’s efforts to exempt businesses from consumer protection regulations, including crucial anti-discrimination laws like the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, even though there is strong bipartisan and corporate support for expanding civil rights laws to include protections for LGBT individuals.
The CFPB is responsible for protecting all consumers, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity—and Paul Watkins must be prevented from putting industry wishes and personal beliefs ahead of that mission.
How did someone with ties to anti-LGBT causes end up leading the @CFPB‘s attempt to exempt businesses from anti-discrimination laws?
Paul Watkins could soon be able to choose which anti-discrimination laws businesses have to follow. More: https://t.co/fBZ3QJgIKU

Paul Watkins, a top official at Trump’s @CFPB, used to work for an anti-LGBT hate group.
But wait… it gets worse. He may soon have the authority to exempt businesses from anti-discrimination laws. https://t.co/elYdhsywp6

National Intelligence Director Issues Thinly-Veiled Warning to AG After Trump Gives Barr Broad Powers
The Director of National Intelligence has just issued a thinly-veiled warning to Attorney General Bill Barr to not overstep now that President Trump has created unprecedented, sweeping powers for the head of the Dept. of Justice. Thursday night the intelligence community and intel experts were stunned when Trump announced he had given Barr total authority to declassify any information related to any investigation of the 2016 election.
Dan Coats, the Director of National Intelligence (DNI) warned Barr in a public memo to work “in accordance with the long-established standards to protect highly-sensitive classified information,” and not “put our national security at risk.”
Those are strong words that indicate President Trump did not consult with Coats, and likely did not consult with FBI Director Chris Wray or CIA Director Gina Haspel before tweeting our Barr’s new powers, then heading to Japan barely 12 hours later.
Coats added that the Intelligence Community “will continue to faithfully execute its mission of providing timely, apolitical intelligence to the President and policymakers,” again, clearly suggesting that Trump’s actions, and possibly Barr’s, are entirely partisan.
Interestingly, Coats characterized Barr’s investigation into how the Russia investigation was started as a “review of intelligence activities related to Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election,” which is not what Barr is conducting.
Trump’s decision to hand Barr the keys to the Intelligence Community’s kingdom is seen as just the latest in a long line of actions – albeit possibly the most dangerous to date – of Trump using the presidency to attack the Intel community – and to “investigate the investigators.”
Intelligence experts have begun to weigh in on Coats’ memo.
Former Intelligence Community attorney, now the Executive Editor of Lawfare, and a Brookings Senior Fellow, and CNN National Security and Legal Analyst:
This does not read to me like a supportive statement from Coats at all. The intelligence committees should seek to have Coats and Haspel answer whether anyone in their agencies was consulted or raised objections to this plan to the White House. https://t.co/30iOEKAXCK
