With potentially thousands of ballots still to be counted, Former Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp is pressuring his gubernatorial rival Stacey Abrams to concede.
While the election was four days ago, the race has not been called for either candidate and many votes remain to be counted. Kemp is currently ahead by 60,000 votes, and Kemp’s campaign claims that it is now “mathematically impossible” for Abrams to make up the difference.
“Stacey Abrams’ antics are a disgrace to democracy and completely ignore the will of the people,” reads a statement from Kemp’s campaign. “Georgia voters have spoken. It’s time for Abrams to listen and concede immediately.”
Civil Rights activists are urging Abrams to remain strong.
The Georgia race has been mired in controversy, with Kemp, as Secretary of State, administering his own potential election to the Governor’s office. Numerous issues of voter suppression crept up, including the purge of more than 85,000 voters three months before Election Day.
More than a million voters were purged from Georgia voter rolls since 2012. It was later found that many of those voters were wrongly purged.
Issues also cropped up on Election Day, with electronic voting machines being locked up, while others were sent out without their electrical cables, leading to snafus and long waits.
