‘Almost Every Sentence Contained a Misleading Statement or a Falsehood
USA Today, which reaches close to three million readers daily, on Wednesday published a dangerous and nearly fact-less op-ed with a byline from President Donald Trump.
In it, President Trump used the platform of one of the nation’s largest and generally least-partisan newspapers to belch out a bevy of falsehoods and a litany of lies – all while attacking half of the country, namely, left-leaning and Democratic voters.
The Washington Post’s Fact Checker (that’s the title of Glenn Kessler’s column) fact-checked Trump’s op-ed, revealing that – as many outraged Americans said – “almost every sentence contained a misleading statement or a falsehood.”
Many of Trump’s claims in his op-ed “we have already debunked,” The Washington Post reports. “Presumably the president is aware of our fact checks — he even links to one — but chose to ignore the facts in service of a campaign-style op-ed.”
In fact, Kessler tweets out this amusing find:
The Post goes into detail about 11 claims Trump made, which mostly focused on his attacks on Medicare for All. But among the claims the Post fact-checked was this absurd statement: “The new Democrats are radical socialists who want to model America’s economy after Venezuela.”
Fact-check: false.
“Venezuela,” The Post notes, “is collapsing after years of near-dictatorship and squandering of oil wealth, but we are unaware of any Democratic leader that has pointed to Venezuela as an economic model.”
This claim by Trump was deemed “absurd” by The Post:
“The Democrats’ plan also would mean the end of choice for seniors over their own health-care decisions. Instead, Democrats would give total power and control over seniors’ health care decisions to the bureaucrats in Washington, D.C.”
