Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Monday found himself getting interrupted by a Methodist leader during a talk on religious liberty organized by the Boston Lawyers Chapter of the Federalist Society.
In the middle of Sessions’ speech, a Methodist minister stood up and quoted the Bible to shame the attorney general about the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
“Remember the words of Jesus!” the minister shouted, and then proceeded to quote from Bible verse Matthew 25:43. “I was hungry and you did not feed me, I was a stranger and you did not welcome me, I was naked and you did not clothe me.”
Sessions quickly thanked the minister for his comments and tried to move on — but the minister stayed the course.
“Brother Jeff, as a fellow United Methodist I call upon you to repent, to care for those in need,” he said. “Remember that when you do not care for others, you are wounding the body of Christ.”
“Well, thank you for those remarks and attack but I would just tell you we do our best everyday to fulfill my ability to enforce the laws of the United States,” Sessions replied.
At this point, a pastor at a Baptist ministry similarly stood up and started preaching to Sessions about how the Gospel demands people treat one another — and this time, the pastor was escorted out of the room.
