Trump Now Claims Mueller Probe Is ‘Illegal’

Trump took a break from disputing how many people died — and when — during last year’s Hurricane Maria disaster to sing his usual tune about the Mueller probe.

The refrain is one he has shared many times, claiming that the investigation is a “witch hunt,” insisting there was no collusion “except by the Clinton campaign,” and fabricating “17 angry Democrats.”

Robert Mueller is a life-long Republican, as are many others directly involved in the investigation.

The newest wrinkle is claiming that the probe is somehow against the law. It should go without saying that this is a lie: the investigation is conducted by the United States Department of Justice Office of Special Counsel who are, of course, well within their legal jurisdiction.

This notion cropped up on Thursday as well, during an interview with Bloomberg News. Trump claimed that some unnamed “great scholars” said that there should not have been a special counsel. This has little to do with whether such a thing is allowed under law.

Of course, the “witch hunt” in question has, in fact, garnered several guilty pleas. The most recent is that of former Campaign Manager Paul Manafort. It is anticipated that Manafort can provide information damaging to several people in the Trump administration, including Trump himself.

There is concern that Trump’s move to call the investigation “illegal” may be a prelude for him attempting to fire Mueller or take other actions to halt the investigation.
