Shanlon Wu: Sessions needs to “lawyer up.”

Court filings made by lawyers for former Trump aide George Papadopoulos late Friday seems to contradict Jeff Sessions’ testimony to Congress, in which he claimed to have nothing to do with the Trump campaign’s efforts to work with Russia in the 2016 election.

The filing, made as part of the sentencing process, included this statement about Papadopoulos presenting opportunities to work with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin: “While some in the room rebuffed George’s offer, Mr Trump nodded with approval and deferred to Mr Sessions who appeared to like the idea and stated that the campaign should look into it.”

If Papadopoulos is telling the truth, it means Attorney General Sessions lied when he claimed to have “pushed back” on a suggested Putin meeting.

Shanlon Wu said Sessions needs to “lawyer up” now.

“It certainly seems to be to be a potentially big problem for him,” Wu said. “He might be able to say his recollection was fuzzy. I mean, his original testimony was trying to be a little bit ambiguous about this as well. But this certainly raises the question of whether he himself was being truthful and whether he might find himself the target of a false statement allegation.”
