Republican Congressman Indicted on Campaign Finance and Conspiracy Charges

U.S. Rep. Duncan Hunter Jr., a Republican from California, has been indicted on federal charges of wire fraud, campaign finance violations, and conspiracy. His wife was also indicted. Hunter, a five-term Congressman, holds extremist anti-LGBT, anti-choice, and pro-gun views.

The indictments center on “improperly using campaign funds for private use,” HuffPost reports, including that they “misused more than $250,000.”

“The Justice Department said the pair used political money to pay for their children’s tuition and spent thousands of dollars at shopping malls, Washington restaurants and surf shops, among other expenditures.”

A pro-Trump Republican, Hunter has mimicked the president’s attacks on the Justice Dept.

“I call on this Congress to root out all the corrupt lawyers and bureaucrats in the DOJ and the FBI so the greatest president of my generation can do the work that the American people duly elected him to do,” Hunter said earlier this month.

Hunter has been under investigation for a year and a half. His Democratic challenger is Ammar Campa-Najjar.
