Former mayor of New York City and current lawyer for President Donald Trump, Rudy Giuliani took to CNN today to claim that his client never attempted to obstruct justice by asking former FBI director James Comey to “go easy” on Michael Flynn.
In a somewhat rambling statement to Jake Tapper on CNN’s State of the Union, Giuliani seems to claim that there never was a meeting with Comey regarding Flynn, and that statements made by the president to Comey never occurred.
“There was no conversation about Michael Flynn. The President didn’t find out that Comey believed there was until about, I think, it was February when it supposedly took place. Memo came out in May. And in between, Comey testified under oath, in no way had he been obstructed at any time,” said Giuliani.
“Then all of the sudden in May he says he felt obstructed. He felt pressured by that comment, ‘you should go easy on Flynn.’ So we maintain the President didn’t say that,'” he continued.
In testimony with congress in June of 2017, Comey spoke of a meeting in the Oval Office with the president that February. In the testimony, Comey said that the president wanted the probe into Flynn dropped, stating that the president hoped he could, “see your way clear to letting this go, to letting Flynn go. He is a good guy. I hope you can let this go.”
Giuliani has said that the president would deny the “let it go” statement if he was asked to testify, and remained resistant to the president testifying in the first place.
Said Giuliani, “why are they asking us to repeat what they already know under oath?”
