NBC News has just released the first clip of Lester Holt’s interview with reclusive Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, and it’s stunning. (Video blow.)
Holt describes just a small part of a video fake news provocateur and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones posted to Twitter.
Jones, Holt says, “posted what essentially is a video calling for people to get their battle rifles ready against the media, saying, ‘It’s time to act,’ ‘It’s got to be done now,’ ‘move criminally’ against people. It sent a chill up my spine. How about yours?” he asked the Twitter co-founder and CEO.
“It did,” Dorsey agreed. “There’s a number of actions that we believe help a call to incitement to violence,” he added.
Holt then asks Dorsey what action Twitter has taken against Alex Jones, who has already been found by CNN to repeatedly have violated Twitters Terms of Service, but was not punished for those offenses.
“I believe we put him in a time out,” Dorsey tells the NBC News anchor, “removing his ability to tweet, for a time period.”
Tuesday night Twitter suspended Jones for one week, after 50,000 people blocked Twitter’s top advertisers.
“A time out seems minor compared to the implications of someone suggesting a call to arms, against a particular group, in this case the media,” Holt said, challenging Dorsey. “How do you respond to that?”
“Any suspension,” Dorsey said, regardless if it’s temporary or permanent, “makes someone think about their actions.”
Dorsey made his remarks – and Jones posted his “incitement to violence” video – after Jones had already been banned from Facebook, Spotify, YouTube and other social media platforms.
Holt’s interview with Dorsey airs Wednesday on NBC Nightly News.
