Trump Administration Set to Rescind Guidelines That Encourage Racial Diversity in College Admissions
The Trump administration is set to rescind guidelines designed to increase diversity in the nation’s colleges. The move could come as early as Tuesday.
The Wall Street Journal describes the guidelines as “a set of Obama-era policies that encourage the use of race in college admissions to promote diverse educational settings.”
The guidelines were phased in between 2011 and 2016.
The Trump administration has weaponized the U.S. Department of Education, using it to decimate diversity and civil rights advances. The Education Dept. has rescinded a large number of Obama-era guidelines and other documents, all designed to protect the civil rights of minorities, including racial minorities, LGBT people, and the disabled.
The Trump administration’s move is “a purely political attack that benefits nobody,” Anurima Bargava, the Obama administration’s Chief of the Educational Opportunities Section of the Civil Rights Division at the Department of Justice, told the WSJ.
Trump, via his DOJ and Education Dept., has turned the enforcement of civil rights protections of its head. The DOJ now has an entire division devoted to ensuring people of faith are able to lodge civil right complaints quickly and easily, while minimizing advancements for minorities. And the Education Dept. has closed hundreds of civil rights investigations without resolving them.
