In a new interview with CNN, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg (RBG) says she’s only 85 years old and has “at least five more years” on the bench.
That would make RBG 90 years old at the time of her eventual retirement.
“I’m now 85,” RBG said on Sunday. “My senior colleague, Justice John Paul Stevens, he stepped down when he was 90, so think I have about at least five more years.”
If she serves another five years, she’ll be closing in on 30 years of service in the federal government. This year marks her 25th anniversary.
To back up her verbal commitment to stick around, she’s already hired law clerks for the next two terms. This is important, but it’s also critical to note that Justice Anthony Kennedy hired law clerks through 2019-2020 before announcing his retirement.
From an onlooker’s standpoint, it appears RBG is hoping to outlast Trump and his anti-everything just and true administration.
“My dear spouse would say that the true symbol of the United States is not the bald eagle – it is the pendulum,” RBG said. “And when it goes very far in one direction you can count on its swinging back.”
