‘If You’ve Lost Newt, Things Are Serious’
Newt Gingrich has been a top Trump supporter for years. Two years ago, in the summer of 2016, Gingrich was considered “one of Trump’s most loyal defenders.” At one point he was widely considered a likely pick to be Trump’s Vice President. The former Speaker of the House, despite his many shortcomings, is widely considered a top leader among conservatives.
Newt Gingrich just denounced President Trump’s performance in Helsinki earlier today, when he praised President Vladimir Putin and, standing next to the Russian president, insisted the Russian Federation did not interfere in the 2016 election.
“President Trump must clarify his statements in Helsinki on our intelligence system and Putin,” Gingrich said via Twitter. “It is the most serious mistake of his presidency and must be corrected—-immediately.”
Just a few weeks ago Gingrich, still one of Trump’s top defenders, had called the president the “most effective uprooter of liberalism.”
Gingrich is the author of “Trump’s America: The Truth about Our Nation’s Great Comeback,” which was released last month.
