The U.S. Dept. of State on Tuesday is expected to announce it is withdrawing from the United Nation’s Human Rights Council. It is a dramatic moment for a nation the world once looked to as the world’s voice on human rights, the nation where the UN lives, the nation whose former First Lady in 1948 chaired the committee that drafted the UN Declaration of Human Rights.
Contrary to what many might understandably believe, the U.S. is not being forced out, nor is the U.S. responding to national and international outrage over the Trump administration’s policy of ripping young children from its undocumented parents’ arms.
Instead, the U.S. State Dept. is making the historic move to protest what it calls is the Council’s anti-Israel bias.
Recently the United States, under the leadership of Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, has lost several votes on matters related to Israel. In one, it was the first time no country stood by the U.S.
In May, President Donald Trump announced that around the world, America is “respected again, I can tell you that. We are respected again. A lot of things have happened, we’re respected again.”
The move also comes in the days following the United States’ president embracing the world’s worst murderous dictator.
