The Trump Administration Withdraws the US From the United Nations Human Rights Council

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and UN Ambassador Nikki Haley late Tuesday afternoon announced the United States is withdrawing from the United Nations’ Human Rights Council.

Ambassador Haley said the United States’ move removes the last shred of credibility from the council.

“Human rights abusers continue to serve on and be elected to the Council,” Haley said in an address. “The world’s most inhumane regimes continue to escape scrutiny.”

Those are strong and ironic words, given that President Trump has self-manufactured a human rights crisis at the country’s southern border which has exploded over the past few days. Americans and the world have been shocked to learn the Trump administration is taking young migrant children from their undocumented parents and housing them in internment camps. Trump is doing so to hold them hostage so he can force funding of his border wall. He continues to ignore public and international outrage, and even outrage from some of his supporters, including a handful of religious right leaders and organizations.

NCRM reported earlier the U.S. planned to withdraw from the Council today.

Haley called the UN Human Rights Council “hypocritical and self-serving.”
