Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was just asked where are all the girls who have been separated from their parents, after a flood of images and videos of young boys have been posted.
“Why is the government only releasing images of the boys being held?” a reporter, likely Kristen Welker of NBC News, asked the DHS Secretary at a White House press conference Monday afternoon. “Where are the girls? Where are the young toddlers?”
“I don’t know,” she answered. “I’m not familiar with those particular images,” she added.
It would be extraordinary for the Secretary of Homeland Security to be so dramatically insulated from images the federal government has released, and images that have been taken by journalists and others who have gained access to the internment camps, that she would not have seen them.
Secretary Nielsen tried to suggest the problem was with the Dept. of Health and Human Services, and not DHS.
“I don’t know what pictures you’re referencing, I’d have to refer you to HHS,” she claimed.
The reporter then challenged Nielsen on her previous claim that the children are all being well-cared for, saying “how can you make that claim if you don’t know where they are?”
Nielsen insisted that it’s not that she doesn’t know where they are, it’s that it’s not her department.
Welker reminded Nielsen that HHS and DHS have both released photos, none of them of boys or toddlers.
Nielsen said she was unaware of the photos, but she would look into it.
