South Carolina Supermarket Censors Honors Student’s Graduation Cake

A South Carolina honors student’s mom ordered a graduation celebration cake for her son, only to find it had been censored by her local supermarket.

Jacob Koscinski earned a 4.89 grade-point average from his Christian homeschool program, allowing him to graduate summa cum laude. His mother, Cara Koscinski, ordered the cake online. It was supposed to say, “Congrats Jacob! Summa Cum Laude class of 2018.”

And that’s where the problem began.

“Publix’s online system was unhappy with the word ‘cum,'” The Washington Post reports. “In Latin, cum is the preposition ‘with,’ as in summa cum laude, ‘with the highest distinction.'”

When the cake was brought home by her husband and sister, she opened the box.

And then posted photos of the cake to Facebook.

“Shame on you Publix for turning an innocent Latin phrase into a total embarrassment for having to explain to my son and others (including my 70 year old mother) about this joke of a cake,” Koscinski wrote. “My son was humiliated!!! I seriously couldn’t make this crap up!!!!”

She says her son, after the explanation, decided he didn’t want to eat much of the cake.
