Andria Zavala’s mother gave her daughter an LGBTQ tee shirt for Easter, but when she wore it to school officials told her it was “a distraction to other people and their beliefs,” according to the Fresno Bee. Among those who objected, ordering her to cover it up are Clark Intermediate School principal Teresa Barber and one other school administrator in Clovis, California.
Zavala is in 8th grade. The simple tee shirt is not advocating for or against an issue or a belief. Presumably it could be viewed as pro- or anti-LGBTQ, although Andria says she thinks the tee shirt “stands for pride, pride in being unapologetically yourself and not having to apologize for your sexual orientation.”
A spokeswoman for the school district confirmed that the principal “had spoken to Andria about her shirt. She said the principal had asked the student if she felt her shirt would be a distraction to others, and if so, to button her over shirt,” the Bee notes.
