Trump Isn’t Sure Voting for Republicans Is All That Important
Speaking at the anti-abortion group Susan B. Anthony List on Tuesday, President Donald Trump ad-libbed a comment that undercut the importance of voting in the 2018 midterm elections, despite the major risk that his party could lose seats in November.
“If Democrats gain power, they will try to reverse these incredible gains,” Trump said, reading from a teleprompter. “Your vote in 2018 is every bit as important as your vote in 2016.”
But then — apparently having considered what he just said — he contradicted himself. “I’m not sure I really believe that, but, you know… I don’t know who the hell wrote that line! I’m not sure…”
In other words, Trump doesn’t think the Republicans holding on to Congress is as important as having him in the White House. It’s an odd message to send in an election year, even if he meant it half-jokingly.
To be fair, he did add: “But it’s still important, remember.” Indeed, it’s just not as important as voting for Trump, apparently.
