USA Today Appears to Have Stopped Trump From Lying About His Tax Cuts – At Least in Part

USA Today is running an op-ed by President Donald Trump, but for the first time ever the president is not lying about his tax cuts. Well, one one key point, at least.

And while he is falsely representing some other facts, score one for the opinion editors.

“In the years ahead, because I signed one of the largest tax cuts in history and the most sweeping tax reform in a generation, many Americans will complete their taxes on a simple, single sheet of paper,” Trump, whose byline appears on the op-ed, claims.

Note the “one of” remark.

This may be one of the first times the president has ever admitted that his tax cuts are not the “biggest in history” Even the claim they are “one of” is disputed by The Washington Post, which lists six that are larger than Trump’s – including two under President Barack Obama, and one under President Ronald Reagan.

Just a few days ago Trump stood outside the White House and in a nationally-televised speech (video) claimed his tax cuts are even bigger than Ronald Reagan’s. (They are not.)

But USA Today did allow the president to get away with a few disputable claims:

“This is the last year Americans will fill out outdated, complicated tax forms.”

“A typical family of four earning $73,000 a year can expect to see an income tax cut of more than $2,000 when they file their tax return in 2019 — slashing their income tax bill in half.”

” We significantly cut our corporate tax rate from one of the highest in the developed world.”

The op-ed is titled, “America’s economy is back and roaring and its people are winning.”
