‘I Am Truly, Truly Sorry’: Joy Reid Apologizes, Says ‘I Genuinely Do Not Believe I Wrote Those Hateful Things’

MSNBC host Joy Reid opened her “AM Joy” show Saturday morning with a very strong statement apologizing for comments she made that were hurtful to the LGBTQ community. Reid addressed old posts on her blog from a decade ago, excavated by a sleuth on Twitter and amplified by right-wing blogs and news sites. She called them “homophobic, discriminatory, and outright weird and hateful.”

“I genuinely do not believe I wrote those hateful things, because they are completely alien to me,” Reid told viewers. “But I can definitely understand, based on things I have tweeted, and have written in the past, why some people don’t believe me.”

“I have not been exempt from being dumb or cruel or hurtful to the very people I want to advocate for. I own that. I get it. And for that I am truly, truly sorry.”

Reid also admitted that in the past she has used anti-LGBT language, but she also made clear that she’s evolved, just like many Americans. She also acknowledged the hurt and pain her comments have caused.
