US Congresswoman Louise Slaughter Dead at 88

Oldest Sitting House Member 

Rep. Louise Slaughter, a Democrat of New York, is dead at 88. She was the head of the House’s New York delegation and the oldest current member of Congress. 

Slaughter was first elected in 1986. From 2007-2011 she served as the Chair of the powerful House Rules Committee, and was the first woman to do so.

The Washington Post’s Ed O’Keefe reports she “died Thursday evening after complications from a fall, according to two Democratic aides.”
