Gun Lobby Opposes Raising Minimum Age to 21
The National Rifle Association has just filed a federal lawsuit against the State of Florida after Governor Rick Scott hours ago signed a gun bill into law. That legislation increases the age to buy any firearm in the Sunshine State to 21, and imposes a three-day waiting period for most gun purchases, but it also will provide funding and policy to enable teachers to be armed.
“The new law strips law-abiding adults aged 18-20 of their Second Amendment right to self-protection and imposes unnecessary delays on all firearm purchases,” the NRA said in a statement after the governor signed the legislation, but prior to filing its lawsuit.
“This bill punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual,†Chris Cox, the executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, the gun group’s lobbying arm.
The lawsuit names Attorney General Pam Bondi and Commissioner of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Rick Swearingen as defendants.
