Education Experts: ‘Betsy DeVos Is Terrible at Her Job and Must Resign Before She Does Further Damage’
‘When Someone Is Unable to Step Up, the Right Thing Is to Step Down’
In a scathing USA Today op-ed two education experts blast Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, urging her to resign.
“Betsy DeVos is terrible at her job and must resign before she does further damage,” former Assistant Education Secretary Peter Cunningham and education writer Richard Whitmire say on Wednesday, one day after DeVos testified before Congress in an embarrassing display of her ignorance. DeVos also was widely criticized for not knowing the very basics of her job in a “60 Minutes” interview Sunday.
Laying out the reasons for why DeVos is a “failure,” the two experts note “she has no demonstrated interest in the public schools that educate 90% of our students. An education secretary has three basic constituencies: parents, teachers and kids. She lacks a connection to any. Her message is parent empowerment, but her base is private schools.”
They also point to her failure as a leader and a role model.
“She couldn’t even muster up a convincing show of empathy and compassion for students, teachers and families at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School during her underwhelming visit on March 7.”
The two experts again call for DeVos to quit.
“DeVos needs to resign. At the very least, someone in her position, like doctors, should do no harm. Surely even she can see the damage she is inflicting on the causes she holds dear,” they say. “When someone is unable to step up, the right thing is to step down.”
